Lenovo Smart Display With Google Assistant

JBL, Lenovo, Sony and LG are all making smart displays similar to (but hopefully less fugly than) the Amazon Echo Show which are, effectively let's face it, static tablets but with oh-so-much more.

Google Maps, Google Duo video calling, and YouTube are some of the use cases mentioned by Lenovo that make use of the display.

Steep discounts during the holidays on the most affordable models of Google's Home smart speakers and the Amazon Echo likely meant both companies were taking losses to get them into millions of homes, analysts told Reuters.

Both models have an odd wedge on the back, and this allows you to position the Lenovo Smart Display either vertically or horizontally.

"With the Google Assistant on smart displays, you can hear and see the help you need". Not only did they announce new headphones with Assistant, but they'll be one of the first with a Google Assistant smart display device. As such, the new crop of smart displays can be expected to do all those stuff that the Google Assistant is already capable of irrespective of the devices it is working in.

I am very bullish on the Google Assistant, over Amazon Alexa and other voice assistants - which is probably a no brainer to most of you. Pricing is not official, but Lenovo is aiming at $199 for the 8-inch model and the 10-inch model at $249.

The software not only contains the Google Assistant, but there are other Google products pre-installed as well. According to a range of third party estimates, Amazon has roughly three-fourths of the smart speaker market to Google's 25 percent.

Google is bringing its voice assistant to a new gadget: smart speakers with screens.

Google Assistant is even coming to higher-end speakers - Klipsch has introduced two new speakers with Google Assistant enabled. The first one comes with 8-inch HD touchscreen display and the second one comes with 10-inch Full HD touchscreen display. Lenovo teamed up with Google on this and although it doesn't have the sexiest of names, it has all the hallmarks of a "Made by Google" device, which is great. It has few buttons for volume adjustments, camera shutter, and mic-disable.

Google has built the operating system entirely itself, giving Assistant a viable UI that feels fluid and useful for a product like this.

Lenovo's Smart Display will be available in soft Grey or Natural Bamboo and will be able to be oriented in landscape or portrait mode when it launches.
