Hedman was selected to play in the 2018 NHL All-Star game to be held here in Tampa.

The scary lower body injury Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman suffered when he collided knee-to-knee with Calgary's Garnet Hathaway in a 5-1 loss Thursday to the Flames will sideline Hedman 3-6 weeks, the team announced.

The 27-year-old Hedman has 334 career points (71 goals, 263 assists) in nine seasons with the Lightning. "Can't replace a guy like [Hedman], but we'll see what happens when we get news".

He entered Thursday's game ranked third in the National Hockey League in points for a defenseman with 33 (six goals, 27 assists). The club will have some time off before getting back into action on January 18, when the Lightning take on the Vegas Golden Knights.

Though Hedman will be out for the All-Star Game, the Lightning are well represented, as Steven Stamkos will captain the Atlantic roster, which also features forward Nikita Kucherov and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.

His last significant injury was early in the 2014-15 season, when he missed more than a month with a fractured finger.

"Often how Heddy goes is how we go", head coach Jon Cooper told "He plays almost half the game in all situations". "He can help dictate the play of how we're doing things".
