The event will determine the U.S. and Canada qualifiers to the EA Sports FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs for a berth to August's FIFA eWorld Cup.

Major League Soccer is joining the esports movement, announcing on Friday its partnership with EA Sports to create eMLS, a competitive Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 league that will feature top players from the USA and Canada.

The first games of the eMLS cup will debut at this year's PAX East in April. Those teams will also be responsible for selecting local talent to represent the team in the eMLS. The three Canadians teams have yet to make an announcement about their pro gamers.

Competition to make eMLS will be fierce, as each of the aforementioned clubs will field an esports squad of just one professional gamer to represent it in the Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 league.

What we know so far is that 19 MLS clubs will participate in eMLS.

"This step forward into competitive gaming is a key component in our partnership with EA Sports to promote deeper engagement and connections between MLS supporters and millions of Federation Internationale de Football Association players around the world", MLS Business Ventures President and Managing Director Gary Stevenson said in a statement. The format is similar, with each National Basketball Association 2K League team representing a traditional National Basketball Association team.

The FIFA eWorld Cup is the conclusion of the FIFA 18 Global Series tournament, an expansion of the long-running annual esports competitions in EA's FIFA franchise.

The NHL is expected to announce its esports plans soon. Do you think North Americans stand a better chance in the eWorld Cup or the real World Cup?

Major League Soccer (MLS) is entering the world of esports in a big way, introducing a new Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 league in partnership with EA Sports. These playoffs will culminate in the Federation Internationale de Football Association eWorld Cup in August.

The top 128 players in the world will advance to two playoff events in June with 32 of those moving on to the Federation Internationale de Football Association eWorld Cup 2018 Grand Final in August.

The hit Federation Internationale de Football Association video game franchise is developed at EA's Vancouver-area studio.
