Manchester United are trying to hijack Manchester City's move for Alexis Sanchez after submitting a formal £25m offer for the Arsenal attacker, according to the Guardian. However, United have spectacularly entered the race to sign the Chile worldwide.

Now, Sky Sports News understands that City have dropped their interest in the player as they are not willing to match United's offer.

Mourinho's United are understood to have thrown their hat into the ring, bidding around £25 million to trump City's £20 million offer as they seek to bolster their forward options and deny their bitter rivals.

Questioned as to whether there was any truth in the rumour, the Arsenal manager was coy.

'The team selection had nothing to do with the transfer market, ' Wenger said.

In later press conferences on Friday, neither Guardiola nor Mourinho gave much away over a potential move for the Arsenal man.

In case you didn't know.

. "I am focused on Liverpool".

"Sanchez is an Arsenal player", he added.

The Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City saga has been going on for a long time now.

He was initially told the club had £80m to spend in January but inflated prices have meant United have been reluctant to pay over the odds now, preferring to keep hold of their money unless a player of notice became available.

But how does Malcom rank alongside the other best under-21 players in Europe? Certainly not, but there's always a way to find a different balance.

Arsenal's star forward is set to leave the club this month with his contract still running down ahead of the summer.

"Obviously we will see what happens in this transfer period".

The Armenia global has fallen out of favour with Mourinho in the last few months and failed to impress since a brief purple patch at the start of 2017-18-he has started just one Premier League match since November 5.
