Reports of City's decision to abandon their pursuit of Sanchez unless Arsenal and the player himself lower their demands emerged hours before Mourinho addressed the press ahead of Monday's Premier League clash with Stoke City.

A reunion could be on the cards with United desperate to sign a new No10 given Henrikh Mkhitaryan's struggles.

"I think in two, three weeks, hopefully the day against Basel, the Champions League game, (he) could be fit, could be ready'" Guardiola said. "You could say that at the moment... it's not that I don't want to inform you, I don't want to give you wrong information and at the moment I must say nothing is decided one way or the other".

There was a subtle difference in tone from Mourinho, however, during his media briefing shortly afterwards at United's Carrington training ground.

"But in relation to Alexis Sanchez I don't say a word, the only word I can say is he is a phenomenal player, apart from that an Arsenal player and I feel I shouldn't say much more than this".

Guardiola said: "I'm focused on Liverpool, believe me".

And Le Tissier believes that signing a clear replacements for Sanchez or Ozil should be Arsenal's top priority in the transfer windows this year.

We don't believe in signing a player just to do something.

With an asking price of around £35 million for the Chilean, it looks like Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, and even Real Madrid are interested in the 28-year-old. "Normally you should stay until the end of the season but we will see".

But do not take that as City throwing in the towel.

It is believed the cost quoted - including transfer, wages and agent fees - is in the region of £35million and City, who are hopeful an agreement can be struck for around £20million, are prepared to walk away from the deal if it does not come down.

Ferguson was furious, believing that Nasri had gone back on his word to put money before glory, but the French global ended his first season as a title victor at the Etihad Stadium, so he had the bank balance and the medal to suggest he made the right decision.

United are looking to bring Shakhtar Donetsk star Fred to Old Trafford this month.
