The IPL Player Retention will take place on January 4, 2018, in Mumbai.

Six of the eight franchises, excluding Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), will have the option of locking a maximum of three players (from capped, uncapped and overseas) from their IPL-10 squad.

The IPL governing council recently announced that a franchise can retain up to five players using a combination of pre-auction retentions and Right to Match (RTM) cards.

If CSK decides to retain three players, a total of Rs. 33 crores will be deducted from their budget. Event the player retentions and auctions are available on the Star Sports. The event, to be staged in Mumbai, will be televised live with owners and mentors and potentially even some of the players to be retained in tow alongside mandarins of the BCCI/IPL and members of the Committee of Administrators.

Among other top Indians who are nearly certain to be retained are Rohit Sharma, who led Mumbai Indians to their title triumph last season, exciting MI all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, who is set to go back to CSK after playing for Gujarat Lions over the last two seasons, and Australian pocket dynamo David Warner for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

There were speculations that Dhoni would be the obvious choice for retention. Each franchise must spend at least 75% of the money at its disposal per season.

· If franchises retain three players, they will be charged Rs 15 crore for the first, Rs 11 crore for the second and Rs 7 crore for the third. If the franchise retains two players, the cost of the players will be 12.5 and 8.5 crores INR respectively. Kings XI Punjab has said it may retain one player. We will have him (Dhoni) back as captain.

The three-time victor has built its team around the leadership of the India ODI opener.

Right to match or RTM basically gives a franchise the authority to match the highest bid for a player they didn't choose to retain pre-auction, and acquire his services again.

Meanwhile, There has been no confirmation about Gautam Gambhir's retention by Kolkata Knight Riders. But there are many complexities when it comes to knowing the complete rules of the retention.
