The report examines aviation data from January 1, 2017 through December 31.

Midway Airport was not included in the 2017 report because it did not rank among the top 20 airports within its size category. Hawaiian Airlines continues to dominate the OTP rankings in the USA, finishing first among North American carriers for the fourth straight year.

O'Hare didn't crack the top 20 for performance on the combined list in 2016 but had a 78.29 percent on-time rate in 2015, up from 71.4 percent the year before, making it the "most improved airport in North America and eighth most improved in the world" that year, according to OAG.

While North American carriers performed admirably against their global peers, several airlines - including Hawaiian, Delta, Alaska, United, WestJet and Southwest - all saw a small dip in on-time performance in 2017.

"In a highly competitive environment, it's great to see the UK-based airlines reporting an impressive on-time performance".

The largest US airlines fared well in the crucial performance indicator of timeliness when compared to other carriers around the world in 2017. Delta-dominated Atlanta was third (82.38%), United hub Denver was fourth (82.24%) and American hub Dallas/Fort Worth was fifth (81.36%). Almost 79.9 percent of flights arriving at or departing from O'Hare a year ago did so within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, OAG said. The U.S. finished with seven airports in the top 20 Mega Airport category. Topping the category was Tokyo Haneda with an on-time performance of 86.75%.

"Flight delays and cancellations have historically been one of the most stressful aspects of travel", said Mike Benjamin, COO of OAG. Paul, had an on-time performance of 85.72%, leading airports with between 20 million and 30 million departing seats. United Airlines was the route's top performer, with an OTP of 74.8.

Hong Kong (HKG) to Taipei (TPE) was the most-heavily trafficked worldwide route in 2017, with a frequency of 29,494 and an average OTP of 70.9.

OAG defines on-time as arriving or departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival/departure times.

The discrepancy in the outcome of airport on-time performance is due to the fact that the current CAA's definition of on-time performance of an global flight is defined as "arrival or departure within 30 minutes of the flight's scheduled time", which doubles the time permitted by the OAG.
