Pence: US Expresses Support for Allies with Delegation to PyeongChang

The talks come after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un used his New Year's Day speech to announce he was open to sending a delegation to the Olympics as well as reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, while vowing to never give up his nuclear weapons program.

The prospects of resolving decades-old tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula remain deeply uncertain. Critics say Kim may be trying to divide Seoul and Washington in a bid to weaken global pressure and sanctions on the North. In short, this is the time for the USA and South Korea to be resolute and committed to our ultimate goal: the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Recently, the US President Donald Trump expressed interest and willingness to hold talks with North Korea.

After the talks, the two Koreas chose to hold military talks on easing border tensions. It risks potentially devastating retaliation not only for South Koreans, and very possibly Japanese citizens, but also large numbers of United States troops and civilians in the South. The US is dealing with a leadership which has every reason to fear regime change and may not be able to distinguish between a token strike and the start of an all-out assault.The administration may be trying to signal that the US is not backing down, despite the relaxing of tensions; or to up the pressure on North Korea or, more likely, press Beijing to do more.

North Korea's participation in the Olympics is a relief for South Korean officials, who anxious Pyongyang could pose a threat to the games if it wasn't involved.

South Korea wants to discuss the resumption of family reunions but Pyongyang snubbed previous offers, saying it will not consider further reunions unless several of its citizens are returned by the South.

Trump himself took credit for the renewed contacts between the ROK and North Korea at Camp David.

Meanwhile, a Japanese foreign ministry official questioned the need for including countries as distant as Colombia and Greece.
