Police spokesperson, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, said protestors had managed to gain entrance to the H&M shop in the East Rand Mall and steal several items.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says they are now monitoring the situation in various malls.

H&M stores in other areas are reported to have been closed, and police are monitoring the situation. "No arrests have been effected up to so far", Dlamini said. "We are going to be here, but the security has told us everything is fine", he said.

Although many online users across the country welcomed the radical action, other warned that if H&M did abandon the country it would mean hundreds of jobs, mainly held by black people, would be lost. "If they are not going to close the shop, they must just know we are going to be here nearly every day, starting from today", he said. The H&M signage outside the shop had been broken and red fragments were still on the floor. "If they want peace they must close this shop", he said.

The Menlyn store was shut after it was completely trashed by the angry protesters.

The retailer had used a black child to model a sweatshirt with the slogan "coolest monkey in the jungle".

National Basketball Association star LeBron James, rapper Diddy and singer The Weeknd are among the celebrities who expressed shock in recent days over the H&M image, which has been removed from online promotions but continues to be circulated on social media.

"In terms of accepting or not accepting your apology, it is not my prerogative". Many people accused the worldwide chain store of racism.

The Swedish fashion chain withdrew the green £7.99 top on its United Kingdom and USA websites after it caused uproar and quickly issued a statement apologising to "anyone it may have offended".

"Apology se gat", he said. Reports indicated that the H&M shop at Sandton City in Johannesburg had been trashed on Saturday. One person reported seeing EFF supporters looting the store before police arrived, evacuated the store and closed it, with some protesters still inside.

Menlyn Park shopping centre management will release a statement in due course.
