Pongal: Bhogi celebrations cover Chennai city in smoke, flight services disrupted

Due to the decreased visibility and operational reasons, a total of 41 trains were delayed, four rescheduled and 13 cancelled.

Airport officials said over 40 worldwide and domestic services suffered cancellation and delay starting around 4 am today, with flight operations finally resuming around 9:30 am when the first service was operated to Mumbai. Due to the heavy smog, 12 arriving flights were diverted and almost 30 departing flights were delayed in view of smoke due to "Bhogi" festival. Due to the thick layer of smoke, both incoming and outgoing air traffic suffered in this period leading to the disruption in flight services, but the services have resumed now, ANI reported.

The Chennai International Airport witnessed a massive smoke due to the burning of old articles on Bogi festival. They flew in from various destinations such as Kuwait, Sharjah and Delhi.


Another SriLankan flight bound for Colombo was also delayed.

Some of the flights, including global flights, heading for Chennai were diverted due to poor visibility and they later arrived after the visibility improved.

Meanwhile, motorists plied their vehicles with their headlights on following the smog.
