"Go on about it, go on about it. Give reasons why you did it".

Walmart says that after the closings it will have 597 clubs.

Thirty-nine stores called by CNNMoney had recorded messages saying the store was closed Thursday but would reopen Friday. And also, they said that population growth wasn't as high as they were expecting in some of the areas where they built these stores.

"As a courtesy to the customers, that we are long term and business personally, Sam's Club could have done a better job there", said Juan Diaz.

Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the world, with more than 260 million customers visiting stores each week. But it's not clear how many employees will be able to have that opportunity to get transferred.

Some of these locations will be reconfigured into e-commerce distribution centers, but altogether over 10,000 Sam's Club workers could be impacted by the closures.

Often food retailers are facing cost increases from landlords that are forcing the retailers' decisions, Flickinger said.

Walmart is doing what their competitor Amazon can't do, throw holiday parties.

"From a fulfillment center logistics standpoint, it makes a lot of sense", Hatfield said.

The Orange store, which is located 2 Boston Post Road, employs 155 people, with the remainder of workers based out of the Manchester store, according to notice filed with the state Labor Department. But that remains to be seen.

The company said it will provide support and resources to those affected by the closures, including up to a $1,000 one-time cash bonus made possible - according to the company - by the new federal tax law.

"It was very sudden and very shocking", Fitz said. A press release wasn't sent out about them until much, much later in the day, hours after we had broken our story on the closings.

One employee says he learned about the closure through a letter dropped off by a delivery service before learning from the store.

Eventually, nine of the other closing stores will join it in the conversion from in-person retail destination to the last stop in the chain for online orders.

Arkansas-based Walmart also reportedly raised the hourly minimum wage for its USA workers to $11 and improved benefit offerings such as parental leave.

With the national unemployment rate at 4.1 percent, a 17-year low, there are more job openings in the retail industry now than at any time since December 2000, government data shows.
