Former finance minister P Chidambaram today called the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) raids at his son Karti Chidambaram's residences in New Delhi and Chennai a "comedy of errors".

As per sources, Chidambaram was present at the Delhi residence when the raids were conducted there. The ED searched the kitchen, living room and halls of the house but found nothing, he added.

Also few days before the CBI had lodged the FIR against Karti Chidambaram and the Mukerjeas on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, getting the illegal indulgence, influencing public servants and criminal delinquency.

"There are obviously no proceeds of crime and the ED has no jurisdiction under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA)", P Chidambaram told reporters.

Speaking to media on ED raids, the senior Congress leader said that "There is no FIR concerning a scheduled crime by CBI or any agency". These cases have been filed sometime ago, notices were issued yesterday and the respondents were asked to file their reply if they wish to and the cases posted for hearing on January 30. On December 1 previous year, the central probe agency had also conducted similar raids on the premises of a relative of Karti and others in the case. No incriminating document was recovered or seized from Chennai residence of Karti Chidambaram by ED. "The CBI FIR in the case has not been quashed and P Chidambaram had earlier appeared before the CBI in the case".

The case pertains to alleged violations of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted to INX Media in 2006, when Chidambaram was finance minister.

Later, Subramanian Swamy alleged that in 2006, a company controlled by Karti received a 5 per cent kickback as a part of Rs 5,000 crore paid by Maxis for a 74 per cent stake in Aircel.

It charged that Karti had "also closed certain bank accounts and attempted to close other bank accounts in order to frustrate the process of attachment" under the PMLA.
