In January, Pyongyang and Seoul agreed to hold high-level bilateral talks to discuss the North's potential participation in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, as well as other issues related to improving relations.

"Without our attitude, that would have never happened", he said.

Trump, however, declined to confirm whether or not he had spoken with Kim, Efe news reported. "I want to show my gratitude", Moon told reporters at a news conference, Reuters reported. I'm not saying I have or haven't.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited Thursday the National Institute of Science and a residential area for scientists and engineers dedicated to satellite development.

Last week, Trump's Twitter taunt about the nuclear button on his desk being "much bigger & more powerful" than Kim's generated alarm among some about the seriousness of a nuclear threat being delivered in a seemingly offhand way.

Mr Trump said he had discussed the situation with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who had told him he was "very thankful for what we've done".

Trump's strategy with North Korea has been hot and cold.

Trump earlier tweeted that he had brought the talks about by being "firm, strong and willing to commit our total "might" against the North".

"You'll see that a lot with me", he said. "I have relationships with people, I think you people are surprised". You could give me 30.

"At the same time, if we can come up with a very peaceful and very good solution, we're working on it", Trump added.

The prospect of military confrontation has been magnified in the past year as Trump and Kim have traded bellicose rhetoric and crude insults, as the North has conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear detonation and three tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles that now put the US mainland in North Korea's range.

The US and South Korea have decided not to stage the annual exercises during the upcoming Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. We hope that North Korea stops provocative actions during the talks and scraps its nuclear weapons.

Lee said, "I explained the results of the South-North high-level talks to the U.S. side, and they expressed their understanding and support".

"I think it's the main objective of this meeting", said Shin Maeng-ho, South Korea's Ambassador to Canada, who is attending the meeting.
