VW Passat GT gets more aggressive

It's set to arrive in USA showrooms during the second quarter. You could look sportier with the Passat R-Line trim level - an appearance package offered only with the base 174-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter - or you could have the 280-hp V-6, but only in the conservatively upscale SEL Premium top trim level. Making its debut at the Detroit Auto Show 2018 next week, it's the heart of the Passat GT where the biggest change takes place, with the introduction of a new engine.

The new Passat GT was designed at Volkswagen's Engineering and Planning Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The production model looks almost identical to the concept Passat GT that VW revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Two-tone, 19-inch "Tornado" wheels and red brake calipers fill the wheel wells, and a sport suspension delivers a better stance. In the Passat GT, the V-6 is rated at 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and it sends power to the front wheels. It borrows the R-Line bumper and adds a honeycomb grille, GT badge, and a red accent line, much like the Golf GTI.

The roof is finished in black, as are the mirror caps, and the window and door trim. The seats are black leatherette with Moonrock Gray inserts and contrast stitching. VW can't quite let go of the Passat's mainstream appeal, mind, and is pointing out that the GT still gets 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, driver's power seat, dual climate control and heated side mirrors are among Passat GT's standard features. The Passat GT features a Composition Media infotainment unit with 6.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display and standard Bluetooth for compatible devices, Voice Control. The engine is mated to a standard six-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic, which features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. And the sedan features two USB ports - one in front and one in the rear. Its design included US customer and dealer feedback. The 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT is expected to arrive in United States dealers in Q2 2018 with prices starting at $29,090 plus an $850 destination charge.
