Weather: Temperatures will drop and could cause flash freezing

Highs are expected to remain in the 20s through most of next week.

Rainfall could break up any ice on the river and cause flooding as the ice builds up at constructions.

Rain that began in the morning Thursday will be on and off through the morning and be more steady as a cold front moves toward the region. This transition will occur from northwest to southeast from late this afternoon through Saturday morning. The record is 57 in Worcester and 61 in Boston and both of those are in jeopardy of being tied.

Overnight Saturday, the temperature will fall to a low of 7 degrees, with wind chill values as low as -2 degrees. Street/stream flooding possible. Very mild. That warmth, combined with heavy rain Friday night and a return to freezing temperatures Saturday afternoon is causing major weather woes. Winds will be coming from the northwest at 9 to 18 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 28 miles per hour.

Elsewhere, rain will continue through daybreak. The day will start with partly sunny skies, but rain is expected to start by late afternoon.

Rain will turn to a mix of freezing rain, sleet and eventually light snow this evening and continue until early morning Friday.

Friday's forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of rain with thunderstorms also possible after 10 a.m.

That will lead to a big freeze-up on roads, driveways, parking lots and sidewalks. The temperature is expected to warm slowly, starting on Martin Luther King Jr. Winds 10-15 miles per hour will make it feel like 10-to-15 degrees. Notice the colder air behind it - that's arriving Saturday.

Sunday becomes drier and cold and that will last into Monday. So any ice left on your driveway from the flash freeze won't be melting anytime soon. The Boston 25 StormTracker Weather team will be covering the changes all weekend, and updates will be posed below in chronological order.

And finally, it appears that a prolonged January thaw is likely from later next week through most of the rest of the month!
