It is now nearly certain that we will see North Korean athletes competing in the Winter Olympics to be held in South Korea next month, and we may witness something similar to the scenes at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, when athletes from both sides of the 38th Parallel marched under one "Korean Peninsula" banner in identical uniforms at the opening ceremony.

"The meeting will bring together nations from across the globe to demonstrate global solidarity against 's unsafe and illegal nuclear and ballistic missile programs", the department said in a statement Thursday.

The Vancouver waterfront may seem like a curious locale to plot such strategy but academic Roland Paris said Canada is doing Tillerson a favour by helping showcase worldwide solidarity for the pressure campaign.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reacts as he arrives for the opening ceremony of the Cemetery of Fallen Fighters of the Korean People's Army (KPA) in Pyongyang July 25, 2013, as part of celebrations ahead of the 60th anniversary of the signing of a truce in the 1950-1953 Korean War.

He also said China and Russian Federation, which have not been invited, will be briefed on the discussions after the meeting.

Japan, South Korea, India and Sweden are among those invited.

Lopez said recent developments going into the Vancouver summit "lessen the need for this to be yet another thorn in the side of North Koreans and maybe gives it more diplomatic opportunity".

The goal, ostensibly, is to get the regime to give up its nuclear capabilities. A January 5 report from South Korea's Ministry of Unification showed that 1,127 people came to South Korea from North Korea, and 83 percent of them were women.

While Chinese exports to North Korea increased in 2017 by 8.3 percent, imports slumped 33 percent from the year earlier, Market Watch reports. "I think you people are surprised".
