Kohli should drop himself if he fails at Centurion: Viru

He'll do us good in overseas conditions and not just in home conditions. And then, the Indian fielders closed in and this coincided with some utterly ridiculous running from South Africa.

South Africa's seamer Morne Morkel had dismissed the India captain for just five runs on Friday (5 January), reducing India to 27-3 in the first innings of their 1stTest against the Proteas.

Former swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag on Saturday stated that Virat Kohli "should drop himself" if he fails in the second Test against South Africa, launching a scathing attack on the India skipper for his team selection.

Having said that, Kohli acknowledged Rahane's importance as a batsman.

"For most of these guys, Titans is their domestic team and they play here at SuperSport Park, so they do know about the style of play on this one".

His explanation? They were both scoring heavily in recent times. "We are very happy with the way the bowlers went about the business", Kohli said. Olivier has played five Tests - all of them in 2017 - and Ngidi made his global debut in a T20I game against Sri Lanka a year ago but is yet to play the other two formats. "It's a very individual thing, we leave it to the individuals to be responsible and prepare".

"Look, these things can always be looked at in hindsight - thinking what if or what if not". If players fit in in the kind of balance we want to go with as a side, then they will fit in.

Rohit made the cut on the pretext of "current form". Never mind that both match-winning efforts also came against their battered neighbours, at home and in different formats. This combination of ruthless confidence and willingness to bear the consequences of doing something that may not be universally approved is what makes him such a successful batsman and captain. More significantly, this is now looking like a pitch where Shikhar Dhawan could have been the impact batsman India had yearned for at the top. It was nothing a good ice pack wouldn't cure but served as a parting reminder of the travails that lay ahead, even on a pitch that is supposedly expected to lack movement off the seam. In Rohit's case his temperament failed him once again as he played rash shots when India needed him to stay after the fall of Kohli's wicket. They nevertheless deserved to play at Newlands based on their track record outside the subcontinent.

The pitch might not have as much grass as the one at Newlands - there is a thinner coating of green here - but the surface appears hard.

3 MARKRAM SHOWS UNDENIABLE CLASS: Aiden Markram fell agonizingly short of a third Test century on day one of the second Test against India. Ashwin was batting far out of his crease and it was an older ball.

If South Africa wins here, there will be no comebacks for India on its African Safari. The South African and Indian bowlers utilized the favorable conditions well to keep their respective teams in the game but it was the hosts who eventually prevailed.
