NSW bushfire emergency warning issued for blaze near Newcastle Airport

A massive blaze continues to burn out of control and threaten the homes of residents in the Hunter Valley.

More than 100 firefighters are still working to contain a bushfire that threatened several homes near Newcastle.

The fire has burnt through 28 hectares around Masonite Rd and is moving in an easterly direction towards Newcastle Airport.

Water bombing aircraft and more than 60 Rural Fire Service personnel are working to contain the fire that is threatening homes in the area.

Emergency Bushfire Warning in NSW Hunter

For a while the Newcastle airport was closed due to visibility reduced by smoke.

The strong gusts has led to the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a severe weather warning for damaging winds.

"Airport management are urging passengers to follow the advice of local emergency authorities and avoid all non-essential travel to the area", it said in a statement.

Both Jetstar and Virgin Australia confirmed flights in and out of the NSW airport were not operating as fire crews put an emergency warning in place.
