Pep Guardiola: Beating Liverpool won't be any easier without Philippe Coutinho

Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, has stressed that any move to replace Philippe Coutinho this month will have to be the "right" decision and no player will be brought in simply because the playmaker has left.

I can guarantee you that Pep Guardiola, if he was in a similar situation at Manchester City, would not have been forced to sell a player like Coutinho as seems to be have been the case with the Liverpool boss. It wasn't the easiest path to that starting spot, but it was the encouragement from Klopp that got him there.

Roberto is known for his flexibility and is fit for playing in the two positions which is something that Klopp is searching for. We played good without him and not-that-good without.

He had no control over that and that tells me that the Anfield transfer committee is still operating in some form at the club. "But it was clear there was no chance".

He said: "There was no other option".

"You miss a person and if you don't miss them then something would have been wrong in the time you were together". It is not that they say "You've got this but on the other hand we've done this and this and so you can not spend".

"That is part of the transfer window so I have nothing to say about it", said Klopp.

"Of course it's an opportunity for me, just as it is for all the rest of the boys who want to play there", he added.

The loss of Coutinho, while significant, should not really harm Liverpool too much this weekend.

"We only have to carry on".

Coutinho moved to the Catalan giants last week for a fee of £106m, plus a further £36m in variables, as the Brazilian global secured his long awaited move to the Camp Nou. He is a player of Leipzig, that's what I know and will be here in the summer, that's what I know as well.

If Coutinho was so highly rated, why did Inter nearly give him away? "If we do it in this window, I don't know", he explained. When we had this conversation around Coutinho, I said there was nothing to say.

It remains to be seen whether the Brazilian will be replaced before the close of the current transfer window on 31 January but Klopp assured supporters that new signings will come, either by the end of the month or in the summer.

Liverpool were handed a boost ahead of tomorrow's visit of Premier League leaders Manchester City with the return to training of 23-goal Mohamed Salah.

"We know we can beat City".
