Police Seek Suspect in New Rochelle High School Junior's Stabbing

Z'inah Brown a 16 year old New Rochelle High School student surrendered Thursday in the fatal stabbing of a teen classmate during a 'wild lunch-hour fight' at a local Dunkin Donuts.

The girl, identified by New Rochelle School District officials as Valaree Schwab, was taken to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx with life-threatening injuries after the stabbing at the restaurant near the campus of New Rochelle High School at about 12:30 p.m., according to the New Rochelle Police Department. There was an argument between two girls, according to police, with one girl stabbing the victim in the left side.

When asked why a girl from Yonkers attended a school in New Rochelle, school officials on Thursday said there are many legal reasons behind such a decision, and they could not divulge which were applicable in Brown's case.

Z'inah Brown turned herself in after she was identified as the suspected killer.

. They're encouraging her to turn herself in.

Police said they had surveillance video lifted from the Dunkin Donuts location about a half-mile from the school, and the murder weapon was recovered.


Police tell The Journal News a series of altercations, including the use of pepper spray, between Schwab and a group of other teens culminated in the stabbing. The student was not in school today and the incident did not happen on school grounds.

"Our hearts go out to all who have been touched by this tragic occurrence", the school stated on its website. The High School and District will make counselors, social workers and other professionals available for students and staff who require assistance for as long as is necessary.

Grief counselors were present at the school Thursday for anyone who needs help following Schwab's death. There will be extra security as well, as police will want to protect against any kind of retaliation.
