Rio Ferdinand shocks many with advice to Alexis Sanchez

Arsene Wenger says there is still a chance Mesut Ozil will stay at Arsenal, but has admitted for the first time Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to sign a new deal at the club.

But United has reportedly emerged as genuine rival to City, whose main attraction to Sanchez is understood to be the presence of Guardiola, the coach who signed him for Barcelona.

This prompted City to drop their interest in a January move for the Arsenal forward with the intention on gambling on Sanchez turning United down and waiting until the summer to make the switch to Eastlands for free at the end of his Arsenal contract.

Manchester City are prepared to risk missing out on Alexis Sanchez - possibly to Manchester United - rather than pay Arsenal's £35m asking price. "That would represent a good deal".

Arsenal are unlikely to let the German leave midway through the campaign, especially if Alexis Sanchez leaves, which looks highly likely. "He's a very good player".

In later press conferences on Friday, neither Guardiola nor Mourinho gave much away over a potential move for the Arsenal man. "No, because if City want Sanchez, they buy Sanchez", said the Italian.

According to The Express, however, United fear that their interest in the striker is being used by the Gunners as a bargaining chip to get City to increase their £20m offer.

The Manchester United legend feels when a player of Sanchez's quality became available, it would have been wrong for the club not to try their luck for him.

"No player would say, "Oh I hope he doesn't come"". But sometimes it can happen: on the table there's a fantastic opportunity and you fight for that opportunity.

Jose Mourinho didn't include the attacking midfielder in his starting line-up for nearly two months before the playmaker returned to the Manchester United team for a goalless draw with Southampton on Boxing Day. "And I don't want this to sound bad towards Everton; they could be like Everton".

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has hinted that if they get Alexis Sanchez now, they won't need to spend big on another attacker in the summer. However, he and his agent are understandably considering United's offer, and any deal could depend on Arsenal securing a replacement, with Bordeaux's Brazilian forward Malcom said to be their main target.
