Bayliss has been the subject of plenty of criticism following England's Ashes defeat, but it has been clear throughout his tenure that apart from home success, his remit had been largely directed at the 50 and 20-over formats.

England won the toss and chose to bowl against Australia in opening one-day worldwide at Melbourne. Though Australia dominated England in Tests, this will be a complete different ball game. If they can put the disappointment of the Test series away, they can be very dangeroud against Australia. Traditionally, Australians are used to England rolling out a staid and workmanlike 50-over team but things have markedly changed.

The success or otherwise of Morgan's team at next year's World Cup will be the ultimate judgment upon the tack taken by the European Central Bank in 2015, when they removed Peter Moores in favour of employing Bayliss with a clear mandate to improve England's limited overs cricket.

Australia included Adam Zampa's leg spin and also the West Australian AJ Tye for his maiden ODI appearance, with Cameron White and Jhye Richardson left to await opportunities at a later point in the series.

Then, Marsh departed two balls after acknowledging a measured 50 when he was bowled by an Adil Rashid googly to check the Australians' momentum. Aaron Finch ensured that the pressure goes back on England after all those early wickets.

Dangerman David Warner lasted just five balls - and one of those was a dropped catch - in making two. Brilliant bowling from Mark Wood. And what a start for Finch and Australia.

However, Ali got his revenge shortly afterwards, with Finch holing out to Jonny Bairstow at deep mid-wicket.

But Taylor says the one-day side are better placed than the Test team to cope without Stokes, who was replaced in the squad by Malan, England's leading run-scorer in the Ashes.

Ahead of a busy global schedule, including home Test matches against India and Pakistan, England coach Trevor Bayliss has urged Root to skip the 2018 Indian Premier League. For Australia, Hazlewood has already been rested for the first ODI after his mesmerising performance in the white jersey. After the Test series, this will be a big test for England.
