All the deceased wrestlers belonged to Kranti Kushti Sankul institution, which has been dominating the state-level tournaments in recent years, and were expected to make the grade for the national championships soon.

Vijay Patil (Ramapur), Shubham Gharge (Soholi, Sangli), Saurabh Mane (Malkhed, Karad), Akash Desai (Kale, Satara) and Avinash Gaikwad (Shirala, Sangli) and the SUV driver Ranjeet Dhanawade lost their lives in the accident.

Two cases of athletes dying in road accidents really call into question the road safety regulations in India and the need to ensure one's safety while travelling late at night.

Five others, including wrestlers, were injured in the accident and have been admitted to hospital.

The accident occurred at around 1 am when the wrestlers were returning after participating in a competition in Satara. They were on their way back from a local sporting competition.

"They were passing from Wangi village to go to small town of Kundal in Sangli. Due to the sugarcane crops, the driver could not see tractor coming onto the road and it hit the front side of the tractor after which the vehicle toppled", the police officer said.

The mishap was so bad that the entire MUV damaged in the mishap and the wrestlers were trapped inside the vehicle.

The seven injured have been taken to a state-run hospital in Sangli. Police have registered a case against the tractor driver in Chinchni- Wangi police station. The police are conducting concerted efforts to nab the tractor driver, who fled from the accident location.
