The incident took place on Sunday, near the Hama air base in central Syria, according to Russian media, German Press Agency (DPA) reported.

The Russian air campaign in support of anti-terrorist efforts by the Syrian authorities lasted from September 2015 to December 2017.

At least seven Russian planes were destroyed and 10 service members were wounded by rebel shelling at a Syrian air base.

"According to posts on a specialized forum, on December 31 a Mi-24 helicopter tripped over power line wires and crashed while escorting a convoy", the CIT wrote on Facebook.

Earlier in Syria, the ISIS militants said that he shot down a Russian helicopter.

Both pilots were killed when the helicopter had to perform an emergency landing 15 kilometers away from the airport.

The investigative blog Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) cited a post from Forumavia aviation forum saying the helicopter had tripped over power line wires and crashed while escorting a convoy.

There was no hostile fire on the helicopter, the ministry added.

Moscow acknowledged in recent months that its special forces are also active on the ground in the offensive against the Islamic State (IS) group.
