Virginia Tech's Terrell and Tremaine Edmunds declare for the NFL Draft

Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds will enter this year's National Football League draft, he announced on social media Wednesday. "These last 3 seasons were great and I will always have lifelong memories there".

"It's time for me to start building a new road, to fulfill the dreams I've always had", Terrell Edmunds wrote. The Edmunds brothers have made a decision to forego their final season of eligibility with the Hokies, in hopes to join their oldest brother, Trey Edmunds, who now plays for the Saints, in the NFL. The trio played together in college one year in 2015, often lining up next to one another on the Hokies' kickoff coverage team.

The Danville duo are the younger brothers of New Orleans Saints running back Trey Edmunds, who spent four years with the Hokies before transferring to play his final season at Maryland.

Their father, Ferrell Edmunds, was a third-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 1988, playing seven seasons for the Dolphins and Seahawks and making two Pro Bowl rosters.

Their decisions are a blow to a Virginia Tech defense that already lost defensive tackle Tim Settle to the draft, in addition to watching senior cornerbacks Greg Stroman and Brandon Facyson and linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka exhaust their eligibility.

Tremaine Edmunds, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound junior right outside linebacker who was a finalist this season for the Butkus Award, is projected by some draft analysts to be a possible first-round pick, while Terrell Edmunds, a 6-2, 220-pound redshirt junior defensive back, could see his draft stock aided by his versatility in the secondary. He registered 109 tackles, including 14½ for losses this season, along with 5½ sacks.

Junior defensive tackle Ricky Walker announced earlier this month he will be back to play his senior season. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper has Tremaine as the 14th best player in the draft, while his colleague Todd McShay has him ranked 31st.

The Virginia Tech defense will have to replace a pair of brothers next season.
