J.J. Abrams, who, after writing and directing The Force Awakens is scheduled to do the same for Episode IX, has created a spec script for TV focused on a similarly off-world family. While HBO and Apple are the top contenders for the project, Warner Bros.is said to be open to other bidders.

Abrams would also executive produce, with Ben Stephenson-head of television for Abrams' Bad Robot Productions-also serving as an executive producer. Warners, Apple and HBO all declined comment. The drama is reportedly set in space, focusing on a family's struggle from tragedy to a new dimension.

Abrams has been active in the TV space as an exec producer, most recently working on HBO's Westworld (with Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy), Showtime's Roadies (with Cameron Crowe), CBS' Person of Interest (with Nolan), Hulu mini 11.22.63 (with Bridget Carpenter). The show is said to deal with a world's battle against a monstrous, oppressive force.

Abrams has co-created numerous television shows, including Felicity, Alias, and Lost.

J.J. now serves as executive producer on HBO's Westworld, and is writing and directing the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX, which is set to be released in 2019. He's repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman.
