"Our hearts go out to the deputy, the family and anyone involved".

A sheriff's deputy has fatally shot a 16-year-old boy in a United States courtroom after a fight broke out involving the youth, his family and the officer.

"The deputy was knocked to the ground as part of that altercation where he came under attack from some of the folks that were involved, family members, and one shot was sacked", said Minerd. The teen was also a part of the incident and was hit in the abdomen by the one shot fired from the deputy's gun, he said.

Minerd told reporters that the deputy "came under attack from some of the folks that were involved".

"On behalf of Sheriff [Dallas] Baldwin and our office, we want to extend out condolences to the Haynes family and wish the officer who was involved a speedy recovery", Minerd said.

Haynes was brought to Grant Medical Center, and was pronounced shortly after arrival dead.

The deputy also was injured and was being treated at a hospital but wasn't shot, Minerd added. His condition is said to be stable.

Events unfolded as a judge wrapped up a hearing involving a firearms charge against the boy and an electronic monitoring device the court assigned him earlier in the case, Minerd said. "That's a very busy courtroom, [a] very emotional floor here in the courthouse", Minerd said. Chief Rick Minerd of the investigative sub-division spoke at a recent press conference.
