Nintendo Switch Tops December US Sales, 3DS Best Sales Month In Years

As usual, physical sales of games were provided by the NPD Group, so any data regarding digital downloads or physical and digital life-to-date numbers Nintendo's internal sales figures. That figure has helped Switch accumulate a mind-bendingly massive 4.8 million, making it the fastest selling games console in United States history. A total of 1.5 million Switch systems were sold during the five-week period of December. December is a pretty critical time for the games industry, as the holiday rush means there's a lot of money to be made on both hardware and software.

Nintendo's other platforms had a solid month as well.

The December 2017 figures also showed a 27% increase in 3DS sales year-over-year, resulting in the Nintendo 3DS family of systems selling 21 million units life-to-date in the U.S. alone.

Nintendo has released Switch sales figures for the month of December ahead of tonight's NPD report. Today, Nintendo revealed some of its sales numbers in the United States, and the 3DS - which many predicted would die out following the launch of the Switch - actually saw a jump in sales. Not bad for a console no one can find. And the hardware is just the beginning of the story, with four Switch titles and two 3DS games making it into the top sales charts: "Super Mario Odyssey at No. 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No. 4, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at No. 9 and Splatoon 2 at No. 16". It'll be interesting to see how the Switch performs now that we've moved beyond the holiday shopping season.
