"The plan is to play a bit more if the knee is keeping (together) because I didn't play for six months", he said.

It was in Melbourne a year ago where he lit the fuse on his late-life tennis renaissance, beating Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori, Mischa Zverev and Stan Wawrinka before downing great rival Rafael Nadal in a five-set final classic.

Muguruza was one of the five seeded women's players who were eliminated on Day 4. And crowds were down on the previous two days. With the win, he is the first Vol to reach the third round of a major since head coach Chris Woodruff played into the third round of the 2001 Australian Open. I won the first match.

Wawrinka won here in 2014, at the French Open the following year and the U.S. Open in '16. It was a confidence booster for the 2014 Melbourne Park champion who had a troubled lead-in to the year's opening Grand Slam, pulling out of an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.

"As long as I enter on the court, and I don't feel any big injury, I'm not going to retire [from a match]".

Sandgren will play either Fernando Verdasco or Maximilian Marterer in the third round.

Julien Benneteau took the Belgian seventh seed out 1-6 7-6 6-1 7-6 in a tight encounter.

Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam victor, admitted he was nowhere near full fitness and so it proved in his second round tie, as he was hammered 6-2 6-1 6-4 by the world No. 97. Lucky loser Bernarda Pera sent ninth seed Johanna Konta tumbling out of the second round with a 6-4 7-5 upset in blazing sunshine on court two.

An inspired Sandgren broke a struggling Wawrinka twice, in the sixth and eighth games of the first set, to go 6-2 up.

The heat peaked during Djokovic's 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 win over Monfils.
