"The spectacular growth of our industry in 2017 proves video game developers, artists, and storytellers are the brightest lights in the United States economy, finding more ways to delight the world's 2.6 billion gamers each year", said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of ESA, which represents the USA video game industry.

The NPD Group has published a few new reports that look into the performance of the video game industry in the US for 2017.

Below you can see the top-20 ranking for games, with Call of Duty: WWII leading at the top, followed by Star Wars: Battlefront II and Super Mario Odyssey. On this occasion, NPD Group revealed the performance of hardware sales in the United States for previous year and determined that PlayStation 4 was the most sold console in that country in 2017.

Nintendo was the overall leader in consumer spending for the month, with Activision Blizzard topping the same category for the year. This was driven by hardware that grew 27% thanks to Nintendo Switch, SNES Classic, revitalized 3DS, and the continued strength of PS4 and Xbox One. On the other hand, the Switch has sold more consoles in its first ten months than any other console in USA history. The genre sold 68% higher in 2017 than in 2016.

NPD backed up Nintendo's claim to its historic sales numbers, saying "Nintendo Switch has sold more consoles than any other platform in history" in the 10 month period since its release.

The NPD Group's December report isn't available just yet, but analyst Mat Piscatella has taken to Twitter and YouTube to discuss some of the highlights that the report will be focusing on. For Piscatella, these numbers reflect the success that the industry has had, as a whole, to satisfy and delight millions of players who chose to invest their money in consoles, video games, microtransactions, subscriptions, etc.
