The Wizard's character and role in the DC Universe has evolved over the years, like so many things in DC Comics lore. The This Is Us and Luke Cage actor hasn't had his name attached to the project before and the announcement has Shazam! fans more than excited.

It was when young Billy Batson called upon Shazam's name that the old wizard transferred his power to Billy, who was transformed into the hero "Captain Marvel".

According to TheWrap, Ron Cephas Jones (This is Us, Luke Cage) is in talks to play the role in director David F. Sandberg's film. The actor is best known for his work as William Hill on NBC's This is Us, for which he has received both Emmy and Screen Actor Guild nominations.

Shazam! is due out in theaters April 5, 2019. The rest of the cast has also been confirmed with Mark Strong from Green Lantern playing his second DC villain in Doctor Sivana, and the rest of the cast including Jack Dylan Grazer (It), Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews and Faithe Herman.

Disney star Asher Angel has been cast as the young Billy Batson, with Zachary Levi playing the titular superhero. Levi said the movie will be like "Superman meets Big". It will be interesting to see the response that Shazam! gets from fans as the production moves along. After a while, he chose to pass on his powers to the would-be villain Black Adam, and after things went south with him, Shazam found a new successor in the form of Billy Batson.

New Line & DC Entertainment's superhero film Shazam! is starting to come together.
