Ex-CIA agent suspected of helping China arrested

American officials suspect China then shared that information with Russian Federation, which employed it to expose, arrest and possibly even kill American spies in that country, said the current and former officials, who declined to be named discussing a highly sensitive matter.

Hong Kong resident Jerry Chun Shing Lee, a naturalised U.S. citizen also known as Zhen Cheng Li, was arrested late Monday after he arrived at JFK International Airport in NY. Court records indicate is a naturalized US citizen and an Army veteran. "During each of the hotel stays, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents conducted court-authorized searches of Lee's room and luggage, and found that Lee was in unauthorized possession of materials relating to the national defense". Agents found two small books with handwritten notes containing names and numbers of covert employees and locations of covert facilities, according to the affidavit.


Between 2010 and 2012, the Chinese killed or imprisoned more than a dozen USA sources in China, the New York Times reported previous year. According to The New York Times, he was under suspicion of having given Chinese authorities classified information that led to the dismantlement of the CIA's spy apparatus there.

According to The New York Times, US counter-intelligence has been working overtime since at least 2012 to uncover a possible pro-Beijing mole within the ranks of America's espionage services.

Dean Boyd, a spokesman, declined comment on the case Tuesday, citing 's ongoing prosecution.

United States intelligence officials, who suspected that China had infiltrated their covert communications following the executions of their sources in the country, believed that Chinese intelligence officers shared the US's method of covert communications with Russian intelligence officers during a joint training session.
