Winston-Salem State football player Najee Ali Baker, 21, was shot and killed at an event on the Wake Forest University campus early Saturday morning, Wake Forest University President Nathan Hatch announced in an official statement.

Winston-Salem State University is providing counseling services from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m.in Gleason Hairston Terrace Courtyard Lounge and noon-1 p.m.at the Bowman Gray House Hospitality Room.

Winston-Salem Police along with Wake Forest Police are still investigating and don't believe the shooter remained on campus.

Officers responded to the scene 1:01 a.m. after receiving a call about gunfire and a fight at an event on campus, Winston-Salem Police Department said in a news release. Baker was taken to a local hospital, where he died from a gunshot wound.

Hatch said in his email that police are increasing security and patrols on Wake's campus and in the surrounding area.

Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State are 9 miles apart. He is from Brooklyn, New York.

"I was shocked when I got the call and as a coach you never want to get this kind of call", Boulware said, adding that he had to notify Baker's father. "We are all really shocked by this because he was a quiet guy and a great teammate".

"I'm looking forward to contributing at Winston-Salem State", Baker told the Winston-Salem Journal last March when he committed. Police said it appears to be an isolated incident.
