BBC Has A Dig At Channel 9 For Nicking Their Breakfast Ad

Channel 9 recently launched an ad for their new-look breakfast show, featuring Karl Stefanovic and Georgie Gardner talking directly to their viewers.

The BBC has taken a sly dig at Channel Nine over a Today promo that looks suspiciously similar to one that the British public broadcaster ran back in 2016.

See the two adverts in full below, starting with BBC Breakfast's promo.

For a start, the concept for both ads is the same: the hosts of the breakfast TV shows are chatting to each other but also to the families watching at home and giving them useful information to start their day.

The BBC ad shows hosts Louise Minchin and Dan Walker delivering morning news updates while speaking directly to "viewers" at home.

The Australian ad even uses the same name for one of the characters when ripping off a line in which anchors warn "Jack" about his burning toast.

It's unclear at this stage whether the BBC intends to take any further action.

Channel Nine's response did not directly address the accusations.

Asked about the similarities, a spokesperson for Channel Nine noted that their promo had only aired for two weeks since premiering earlier this month.

The BBC has been contacted for comment.
