Orlando's Elfrid Payton missed a twisting jumper in the lane and teammate Bismack Biyombo was unable to convert a tip, with a whistle blowing with 0.2 second left when the ball appeared to go out of bounds. That inadvertent whistle resulted in a jump ball at midcourt, basically ending the game and averting what would have been a bad Cleveland loss.

Magic forward Aaron Gordon grabbed the toss and sank an apparent game-winning 45-footer as the horn sounded and Cleveland's crowds shrieked in disbelief. He He then played for the Jazz before his move to Sacramento.

For the Celtics, Thursday night was simple: Without its starting point guard they didn't protect the basketball.

LeBron James' Cavaliers have been so used to always playing in June and, despite their usual mid-season malaise, they would pick up the slack towards the end of the regular season and peak during the playoffs. He'll likely reach the plateau on Saturday when Cleveland hosts Oklahoma City. In the closing minutes, he also took a bad step-back 3-pointer that was way off the mark and committed one of his six turnovers while trying a cross-court pass out of a double team.

Payton led the Magic (13-32) with 19 points, while Gordon and Evan Fournier each scored 17. The Cavs have not gotten good guard play there from Jose Calderon and Derrick Rose so exploring a trade for a guy who doesn't really need to go shot hunting and can adeptly run an offense is not a bad idea. Some of the same problems would continue to plague the Cavaliers in the second half.

Orlando coach Frank Vogel was anxious the Cavs would play better.

In just his fifth start of the season, Thomas led the Cavaliers with 21 points - going 6-for-15 from the floor, including 3-of-10 from long-distance, adding four assists, three boards and a pair of steals. Hill would be an interesting option for the Cavs, especially given their reported reluctance to part with Brooklyn's 2018 first round pick.

Golden State's Stephen Curry is the other captain. In that game, it showed the increasing gap between the two teams.

Magic: Afflalo took a wild swing at Bjelica, a punch Vogel knew would result in league punishment.

"We want to play better", he said. His 16 points came on 7-of-16 shooting, but he went 0 for 4 from 3-point range and 2 for 8 from the free-throw line. The Sixers won for the sixth time in seven games and ended a three-game losing streak to Boston. "He has to understand that his health is most important and without that we can't go very far", Lue said. This is indicative of the fact that some players may have already given up this early in the season. Iman Shumpert has yet to return after arthroscopic knee surgery.
