Golf Roundup: McIlroy one shot behind leaders Fisher, Pieters in Abu Dhabi

Rory McIlroy struggled to find third gear in the final round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship; his 2-under-par 34-36=70 left him T3 on 18-under 270, four back of the victor Tommy Fleetwood. On 17 his approach came up short in sand, had a terrible lie and he failed to save par; the title bid, already stretched by Fleetwood's back nine blitz, was over despite a 72nd hole birdie. He later added a birdie on the 16th, but that was not enough to catch Fleetwood and he finished with a 69 for a 20-under finish.

Fisher was playing some superb golf behind him, though, and he rolled in a 50-foot putt for an eagle at the second before adding birdies at the fourth and seventh.

Rory McIlroy, who closed with a 70, shared third place with Matthew Fitzpatrick two shots adrift of Fisher, while Pieters and Chris Paisley were a shot further back.

But Fleetwood then birdied the 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes for a seven-under par 65 round to finish on 22-under 267.

He shot a third-round two-over par 74 - including three bogeys and a double bogey on a disastrous back nine - to sit at one-under overall.

Fox started poorly with a bogey on the first hole in Abu Dhabi, but rallied with four birdies to keep himself in the reckoning for places.
