United States government shutdown underway amid blame game

Results from the final Senate vote on the Republican bill aimed at thwarting a shutdown were announced around midnight and it was 10 votes short.

During the last lapse in federal funding in 2013, Mr. Trump said it was the president's responsiblity to resolve the impasse.

"Negotiating with this White House is like negotiating with jello, it is next to impossible", Schumer said at a press conference.

Mulvaney swiped at Schumer after the NY senator slammed Trump for shifting positions during a meeting Friday that was a last-ditch attempt to set a deal.

Because of the Republican's razor thin majority in the Senate, and the chamber's procedural rules that require 60 out of the Senate's 100 members to allow a controversial bill to move forward, any Republican funding measure will need at least some Democratic support.

Senate Democrats, along with Graham and Flake, voted to shut the federal government down after they did not get their way in slipping an amnesty plan for millions of illegal aliens into the spending bill.

The White House also said Saturday they would accept a three-week bill that expires on February 8, but said that immigration should only be dealt with after federal funding is reinstated. But a broader effort faltered, and Republicans eventually backed down and supported a round of budget talks led by Paul Ryan, R-Wis., then chairman of the House Budget Committee.

"On the thorniest issue of immigration, the president said many times he would take a deal that included DACA in exchange for the wall", the Minority Leader declared.

Schumer is not the first lawmaker to publicly express frustration with Trump's wavering views - even Republican leaders have called him out.

"Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown", she declared, referring to the minority leader, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, who met with Trump earlier Friday.

Republicans and Democrats are blaming each other for the congressional failure to pass a short-term bill to continue funding for US federal agencies and prevent some of them from shutting down.

"Negotiating with this White House is like negotiating with Jell-O".

Federal employees deemed essential will be expected to report to work. The Republicans are placing the blame for the shutdown squarely on Democratic lawmakers, saying that they made passage of the bill contingent on an agreement regarding DACA recipients, and Dreamers, who were brought to the United States illegally as children.

It also said it would not discuss immigration until the government is up and running again.

Republicans believe they are on solid ground in demanding an open government as the first order of business.

"The problems start from the top and have to get solved from the top", Trump said.

"You have troops headed down range to Kuwait for six months and they are anxious about the fact that they aren't going to get paid right away", he said "It's unconscionable". When pressed on the commitment, Schumer did not say how much he had agreed to consider spending on the wall. A deal, Schumer said, seemed more possible.

A sign announcing the closure of the Statue of Liberty, due to the US government shutdown, sits near the ferry dock to the Statue of Liberty at Battery Park in New York, Jan. 20, 2018. It had not - the idea was merely that, an idea floated by a handful of Republicans.

As of Saturday evening, there is no tangible alternative proposal to fund the government. But then, Mr. Trump began adding more requirements for any such deal, Schumer said, making a spending deal less of a compromise and more of a capitulation to immigration hardliners.
