Sheriff's deputies received a call about the shooting around 7:45 p.m. local time.

During the argument, one man began to enter a vehicle driven by his girlfriend when the other man opened fire, the statement said.

After the man and girlfriend took off in the vehicle, they realized the toddler was hit and they pulled over in front of a restaurant about two miles away in Carson. The victims left the location in their vehicle and subsequently discovered the young child in the auto suffered a gunshot wound.

Deputies say the child was a bystander to an argument between two men in the parking lot outside a liquor store on W. Alondra Boulevard. The boy was transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he died of his injuries. The suspect is described as a man driving a dark-colored sedan. Officials said anyone with information about the crime can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Footage from the scene showed investigators combing the scene around a nearby Mexican restaurant and corner store.
