Amazon ready to open checkout-less store to public

The store will be opening for the first time in Seattle at 7 AM.

For now, Amazon is testing the concept on a limited basis and has no plans to implement the technology in Whole Foods. It relies on sensors and cameras to ascertain what shoppers have removed from the shelves and what they have put back. Anything that is picked up off a shelf is added to a virtual cart. The whole idea is just to save you as much time as possible from entering to checking out without actually need to scan each and every item and pay on the spot with cash or credit. To start shopping, customers must scan an Amazon Go smartphone app and pass through a gated turnstile.

"The store knows you're leaving and it tallies up your items and charges your account", said Gianna Puerini, vice president for Amazon Go.

The Amazon Go store features most items you'd see in a typical store, one notable exception, however, is individual pieces of fruits such as apples and bananas, there are also no items that vary in weight and size. Over the past year, employees at Amazon's headquarters acted as the guinea pigs, ducking in to grab plastic-wrapped sandwiches, chips, and yogurt.

What do you think of this technology?

You won't find a squeaking hot dog rotisserie in Amazon.com Inc.'s cashierless convenience store.

A large, full-service supermarket, which typically carries around 38,000 items, would be a very different and hard problem from the small size and limited selection offered at Amazon Go.

Overhead cameras inside the Amazon Go store. However, Amazon announced that the general public will get their first taste of the stores beginning this week. The inside of the store is just like any other, with products you can buy all over the place.

Kumar won't say how good the company's technology is at tallying your purchases beyond "very, very accurate", but the store does stock a lot of items that look very similar, like Diet Dr Pepper and Caffeine Free Diet Dr Pepper.

Amazon Go's offerings include groceries, ready-to-eat meals, cold drinks and meal prep kits. It's not until a few minutes later - when the Amazon receipt catches up and gets sent to your phone - that you realize everything is above board.
