The devastated children of a Canadian pharmaceutical tycoon who was found dead alongside their mother have hired private investigators to prove they were murdered and not killed in a murder-suicide. The home was up for sale at the time and police have said there were no signs of forced entry.

The hypothesis of at least one executioners is a censure to the police doubt that Barry and Honey Sherman passed on in a puzzling homicide suicide, the CBC reports. They were in an upright seated position near a pool in the basement, with the coroner previously ruling they had died from "ligature neck compression". However, those close to the couple insisted from the get-go that this was unlikely, and a team of private investigators hired by the Sherman family has now concluded that their death was most probably the result of a professional contract killing.

Investigators found evidence that the pair had their necks wrapped with leather belts while their wrists showed signs they had been bound together.

The city's homicide unit had said that both Mr and Mrs Sherman were strangled to death but did not classify the deaths as homicides. However, according to latest reports, police investigators now believe the couple were killed by multiple killers.

The independent sleuths also suspect the couple may have been killed on December 13 - two days before they were discovered - based on the clothes Honey Sherman, 70, was wearing at the time.

Honey Sherman also had cuts on her face, and was discovered in a pool of her own blood, the CBC reported, leading investigators to think she struggled with her suspected attackers. He is often credited with revolutionising the drugs industry in Canada.

Police say no rope or other ties were found near the bodies but investigators did spend several days scouring the sewers around the couples North York home for evidence. The couple, who were quite socially active among the city's gala class, was believed to have amassed a fortune of some $4.77 billion before their deaths.

Some shocking new reports may be pointing to a double-homicide in the death of a Canadian billionaire and his wife, found dead in December. "They wouldn't end that way", he said.
