Talks are unlikely to start until after the window closes, although Wilshere has indicated he is keen to extend his stay beyond the summer with a club he has served for 13 years - save for spending last season out on loan.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has excused his former club of pushing Jack Wilshere out of the club over the midfielder's contract situation.

Meanwhile, Wilshere has successfully reintegrated into the team after breaking his leg while on loan at Bournemouth past year and recaptured some of the form that once saw him hailed as Arsenal and England's future. "I see him here because he is an Arsenal man", said Wenger.

Wilshere, who has enjoyed a fruitful spell in the Gunners team after suffering from injury in recent seasons, was given the captaincy in the defeat to Bournemouth last time out.

"The fact that he has been away and come back - he realises as well that life here is not so bad maybe".

Arsenal have been handed a major boost, after Gunners legend Alan Smith revealed he has sources suggesting Mesut Ozil is close to signing a new deal with the club.

Both sides have made it clear they want a deal agreed, though, and a new long-term contract could see Wilshere stay at Arsenal for his entire career.

"After that we have to find a satisfying financial agreement that is good for him and that is what we are trying to do".

"He's much more patient and mature, analyses better".

And Wenger believes that, with the way things are headed, it's impossible to rule out seeing a player on a £1m-a-week deal in the future. Wenger said. "He has a lot of prevention to do, and he does that religiously now".

"Before he was a bit more, "My body can take that", like we all are when we are 20".
