Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scored twice as Barcelona cruised to a 5-0 win at Real Betis on Sunday, increasing its Spanish league lead.

Ivan Rakitic also scored for the Catalan club, which moved 11 points ahead of Atletico Madrid at the start of La Liga's second half.

Rakitic was the next to try his luck from range, which forced Betis goalkeeper Antonio Adan into the first save of the evening, before Messi fired into the side netting from an acute angle after being played in on goal by Suarez.

The game got off to a frenetic start as Betis closed Barca down to deny them time on the ball in the opening stages.

Betis had won their previous two matches, scoring eight goals in the process, and they stayed true to their bold pressing approach under Quique Setien during a keenly-contested opening 45 minutes.

Barca's control had been growing, though, despite the loss of Thomas Vermaelen to injury towards the end of the first half, and they deserved the lead given to them by former Sevilla captain Rakitic in the 59th minute.

The defenders' advances nearly paid dividends as early as the third minute, as Andres Guardado found a gap in-line with goal, but flashed just wide of Marc-Andre ter Stegen's left-hand upright from range. He was replaced by France worldwide Samuel Umtiti, who returned after a long injury layoff.

The hosts were expected to provide Ernesto Valvede's side with a challenge, such was their recent form, but after holding out at 0-0 until the break, Betis succumbed to the Catalans' quality, conceding five second half goals.

Suarez's volley made it 3-0 before Messi's clinical strike and the Uruguyuan curled effort sealed victory.

Five minutes later, the game was effectively over.

The rout was completed a minute when Suarez tucked the ball into the net after he was teed up by Messi. Busquets robbed Fabian Ruiz in his own half and played the ball through to Messi, who turned to face Adan and rifled a low shot into the right-hand corner.

Messi, who has scored seven goals in his last six games, leads the league with 19 goals, four more than Suarez.
