Apple has announced it will release the HomePod on February 9th and that preorders for the device will start this Friday, January 26th.

Users will have the option to press the display on the top of the HomePod to speak to Siri, in the event they want to disable the "Hey Siri" feature.

HomePod is a direct competitor to Amazon Echo and speakers with Google's Assistant installed. Originally expected to begin shipping late a year ago, the HomePod was delayed in November and is listed as shipping in "early 2018".

The HomePod will work like current iOS devices where users can activate Apple's voice assitant by saying the phrase "Hey Siri".

Apple's devices are always aimed at the more premium end of the market and the HomePod is sticking firmly with this tradition. Hopefully it sounds as good as it did when we first heard it at WWDC.

"Through SiriKit, HomePod supports third-party messaging apps, so users can ask Siri to send a message to a friend or colleague using apps like WhatsApp", explains Apple.

Tucked inside its round mesh fabric design are seven beamforming tweeters that precisely focus the sound.

It's also the only smart speaker that features compatibility with Apple Music which is sure to make it hugely popular with the millions of subscribers to this service. This is why Apple may have chosen to include the ability to must Siri on its HomePod.

HomePod will be available in Apple Stores and at select Apple Authorised Resellers, including Best Buy in the US; Argos, Dixons Carphone (Currys PC World), John Lewis, Shop Direct (Very and Littlewoods), EE and Apple Premium Resellers in the United Kingdom; and The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Myer and Telstra in Australia, beginning Friday, February 9.

It is only a matter of time before Apple announced more information on its take on the smart speaker.
