I think that character ... everybody would like to see something different done with it.

Speaking with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival ahead of his directorial debut for his feature film Yardie, Elba cast doubt on the possibility that he could one day play the role of 007 in the popular spy franchise. The classic character is now being portrayed by Daniel Craig.

'There's no such thing as a black Bond, ' the 45-year-old said.

"Are we interested in having a character, a Bond character [that is anything] other than being a male?" he asked during a filmed chat with the publication.

He also spoke out about his dislike of the phrase "black Bond".

Elba probably could have been a magnificent James Bond, as he has already dabbled in action films, has a lovely accent and looks pretty incredible in a suit.

Bond producer Barbara Broccoli recently admitted she would welcome a new James Bond of any sex or race, suggesting that she would be open to "pushing the envelope a little bit" when it comes to the tradition of the British spy.

"When the opportunity came, I read the script and realized that everything that was in the script I could certainly amplify with some truth", Elba, who is African East London, told Deadline. "If there was ever any chance of me getting Bond, it's gone". Is it a question of being suave?

"Honestly, it's a rumor that's really starting to eat itself", he previously stated.

"I've always detested the phrase "Black Bond", I just don't understand it", he sighed on United Kingdom breakfast show Lorraine.
