The Ukip chief said the party "cannot politically afford" to be plunged into another search for a leader after the national executive committee (NEC) backed a motion of no confidence in him.

A UKIP politician has stopped campaigning during an Isle of Wight by-election due to the "immature" way the national party leader has handled an alleged racist incident.

Even disgraced former Tory MP Neil Hamilton, a man synonymous with sleaze who is now Ukip party's leader in Wales, thought Bolton was beyond the pale.

Speaking to ITV's Good Morning Britain, Mr Bolton denied that his private life was to blame in the crisis gripping the party.

"We will survive. We have been squeezed by a two party system where the electorate have either been spooked by Corbyn or seen him as the new anti-establishment candidate".

"It is now time to put an end to the factional infighting within the party and to remove those who have been a part of that", he said. "I'm attempting to do that".

He added that Brexit was "the most pressing matter facing our country and I am determined not to allow the NEC to distract the party away from participating forcefully in the independence debate".

Mr Bolton said Ukip needed to undergo constitutional reform, but denied he was trying to keep a grip on the party.

Mr Bolton said the romantic element of their relationship had ended and Ms Marney had resigned from the party.

Messages from the 25-year old model, actress and writer, leaked to the press, showed her saying Prince Harry's fiancee Meghan Markle would "taint" the royal family, using the word negro and expressing white nationalist sentiments.

Nigel asked whether Henry Bolton can win the EGM which is set to take place in February. "It is about whether UKIP is fit for goal".

A slew of party spokesmen have resigned in response to Mr Bolton's refusal to go - but Mr Hornby ruled out any of Bolton's four UKIP councillors following them.
