United States shutdown to end as Senate strikes deal

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas said he thought Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY agreed to push back the vote to give his caucus "a chance to chew" on a GOP proposal to break the impasse. And from now until the moment McConnell holds the DACA vote he promised, everyone in Washington will be frantically trying to be the last person in Donald Trump's ear before he makes a decision. The House approved the measure shortly thereafter, sending the spending bill to Trump, who quickly signed it.

"We need to move forward". The Senate adjourned without voting Sunday, guaranteeing the shutdown would continue into a third day.

The shutdown began Saturday after Democrats derailed a Republican measure that would have kept government open until February 16.

Trump's attempts to negotiate an end to the shutdown with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer collapsed on Friday in recriminations and fingerpointing. The parks were closed during the last shutdown in 2013, upsetting many tourists and resulting in the loss of $500 million in visitor spending in areas around the parks and at the Smithsonian museums. Its effects will likely be more visible on Monday, when financial markets and federal offices open.

The U.S. government shutdown that began three days ago is nearing an end after the U.S. Senate passed a stopgap budget bill, reopening all government functions until February 8. But several senators said on Sunday the vote could be accelerated.

"As I have always said, once the government is funded, my administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration".

President Trump tweeted about the one year anniversary of his presidency and the government shutdown.

Before the government can reopen the Senate must vote on final passage, the House must approve in turn, and President Donald Trump must sign the measure.

"If we pass something with 60 or 70 votes in the Senate, it'll get the president's support and then the House will support it", Flake predicted. It normally takes a supermajority of 60 senators out of the full 100 to end a filibuster and pass legislation.

But McConnell rejected the idea. For many members of Congress, it was about making sure the opposing party would shoulder blame for the shutdown, which was being labeled as either the "Schumer shutdown" or the "Trump shutdown", depending on the party affiliation of the lawmaker. While budget negotiations have worked through a number of sticking points, including domestic vs defense spending caps, children's health insurance and disaster relief, both sides have dug in deeper over immigration - convinced the other side would blink.

"I'm not holding my breath" for an agreement with Trump on immigration, said Sen. "But they can go nowhere until Senate Democrats realize that the extreme path their Leader has charted leads them nowhere".

"When it comes to immigrants, Latinos and their families, Democrats are still not willing to go to the mat to allow people in my community to live in our country legally", Gutierrez said.

Donnelly, referring to what is widely considered a horribly fractured Congress, said: "There's such trust among the members here, that we have each other's backs, that we don't worry about Republican or Democrat".

Amid the sensitive talks to reopen the government, Trump's campaign on Saturday released a 30-second advertisement on immigration.

Many conservatives dismiss any legal protection for the young immigrants as "amnesty". Separately, President Trump turned away from not one, but two bipartisan compromises. Build the wall. Deport criminals.

"Shutting down the government and depriving American citizens of services because you want amnesty for illegal immigrants is a massive political blunder", said Cotton.

The White House may take a more leading role on the revived immigration debate, according to the official, and hosted senators for a discussion on the topic Monday. "We will make a long-term deal on immigration if and only if it's good for our country".
