US Senate votes to end gov't shutdown, bill goes to House

The current government funding expired on Friday midnight as the Senate failed to advance a stopgap spending bill, which had passed the House of Representatives and would fund the government through February 16.

"As I have always said, once the Government is funded, my Administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration".

After going through the games of twice blocking a short-term spending bill to keep the government open for another four weeks, what exactly did the Senate Democratic conference accomplish other than an oral commitment from McConnell to bring up DACA legislation that Senate Republicans were already intent on bringing up before early March? The White House argues Democrats "caved" after Trump refused to negotiate with them on immigration policy until the government reopened.

He pushed his party over a cliff, hoping that he could hold his fellow Democrats together and use the pressure that would build on President Trump and congressional Republicans to attach a DACA solution to a bill that would reopen the government.

The roughly 700,000 young people were brought to the United States illegally as children, mainly from Mexico and Central America. "We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country".

Former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program gave the Dreamers legal protections and shielded them from deportation. Senate Democrats dropped their objections to a stopgap spending measure.

But Democratic leaders, anxious about being blamed for the disruptive shutdown that resulted, relented in the end and accepted a pledge by Republicans to hold a debate later over the fate of the Dreamers and related immigration issues.

Essential federal services and the military were operational Monday, but even active-duty troops will not be paid until a deal is formally sealed.

The shutdown, the first since 2013, cast a shadow over the first anniversary of Trump's presidential inauguration on Saturday and forced him to cancel a planned weekend trip to his Mar-a-Lago resort in the state of Florida.

The U.S. government can not fully operate without funding bills that are voted in Congress regularly. The last US government shutdown was in 2013.

Trump has staked his political fortunes on taking a hard line on immigrants, painting them as criminals and scroungers.

Markets have absorbed the shutdown drama over the past week.
