Kendrick added three more wins to the list during the pre-show - winning for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video for "HUMBLE".

The 60th annual Grammy Awards started strong Sunday night with an opening performance from Kendrick Lamar that featured U2 and Dave Chappelle. But he lost out to Taylor Swift.

The Grammy Awards, most important of music industry in United States, return to NY tonight to celebrate an 60 ª edition marked by diversity of ir nominees and awareness of sexual harassment. Though it keeps its edges intact, Lorde's Melodrama is the closest thing to a pure pop record on the list - which could help it benefit from vote-splitting - though Mars' album comes close enough to count. The Hawaiian-born singer earned three awards in R&B categories before the main telecast.

But Jay-Z was not being universally celebrated.

Inside the venue, pop singer Kesha, who has been battling her former record producer Dr. Luke for years in United States courts over allegations of emotional and sexual abuse, is to perform her defiant single "Praying".

"Jay for president", Lamar said in his acceptance speech.

The rapper beat Jay-Z to the best rap/sung performance prize with LOYALTY which features singer Rihanna and came after earlier success in the non-televised part of the ceremony.

Awards were also posthumously given to Leonard Cohen, for best rock performance, and Carrie Fisher, for best spoken word album with her reading of her memoir The Princess Diarist.

Kesha gave a passionate performance at the Grammy Awards with the help of powerful women behind her, including the Resistance Revival Chorus.

"Thank you to my parents and my brother for believing in me", she said, also urging the crowd to "support real music and real artists because everyone deserves the same shot".

Country singer Reba McEntire and Americana music band The Mavericks were among those wearing white roses as a symbol of solidarity with victims of sexual harassment, as the Time's Up movement spread from Hollywood to the music industry.

Chappelle won best comedy album for his first comedy album in more than 12 years: the double album to his first two Netflix specials, "The Age of Spin" and "Deep in the Heart of Texas". "And I think if we did that more often, a lot of these problems would be non-existent", she said.

The nominees for Album of the year include "Awaken, My Love!".

The first ever one was held on 4 May 1959.
