Preston North End move to clarify speculation in the British press regarding the future of Jordan Hugill, who they stress is not on his way to Crystal Palace.

"Jordan remains a contracted player to Preston North End Football Club".

There has since been contact between the clubs but nothing in the way of a deal being agreed, Palace believed to favour a deal which weighs more towards payments linked to appearances.

The 25-year old has been a target for Leeds and Reading over the past month and this has followed on from intense speculation on his future in the previous window.

Preston released a statement around lunchtime, however, which described the report as "wholly inaccurate" adding: "we have not agreed any transfer fee with any club for Jordan Hugill".

And in December manager Alex Neill insisted Hugill would not be sold in January.

The unsettled striker slapped in a transfer request during the summer which Preston rejected.

Palace's interest in the player will also be a big blow to the likes of Leeds and Reading who are desperate to sign a striker in the coming days and saw Hugill as a ideal option.

Palace are desperately short in attack, with Christian Benteke their only fit and available senior striker. However, it now looks like Crystal Palace will win the race for him.
