Gigi Hadid slams body shamers

Taking to her social media on Sunday evening, the star had a fair bit to say to those who have commented on her fluctuating weight over the years, after the 22-year-old was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease.

Nevertheless, in her final post, Hadid stated she was unwilling to explain how her body looks to other people any longer, even though, ironically, she wrote a 1000-word essay on precisely that topic.

The supermodel was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, which is also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis.

"Those of you who called me "too big for the industry" were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that".

'Over the last few years I've been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body's ability to retain heat, etc, ' she wrote.

And she insisted she wasn't eating any less than she used to, it was that her "body just handles it differently now". Symptoms can include tiredness, being sensitive to cold, weight gain, depression and muscle cramps, and if this isn't treated it can lead to complications such as an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and developing a goitre - an abnormal swelling of the thyroid gland that causes a lump to form in the throat. Recently, a lot of people have criticized her online for losing weight and for supposedly getting too skinny and not promoting a healthy body image.

Hadid first opened up about her health battles in 2016, telling ELLE magazine "my metabolism actually changed like insane this year". The Victoria's Secret model said she "will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesnt suit ur "beauty" expectation, shouldnt have to". Ultimately, however, she feels her best - and that's what matters most.

Gigi added: "Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those u don't".

"I have Hashimoto's disease".

Earlier in the day she took to Twitter to address her health, calling out those who were 'so determined to come up with why my body has changed over the years'.
